Danny Kim rode his standup bodyboard better than most surfers rode their fiberglass boards. He could pull all the same moves and more and without the luxury of a fin. Danny was well ahead of his time and was the best at what has since become a forgotten art.Photo late 80′s.

When bodyboarding first began to explode worldwide some of the first competitors rode standup. Throughout the 80′s standup bodyboarding flourished and Danny Kim from the Westside of Oahu was the man. By the 90′s the stand-up crew were disappearing and nobody stood-up in heats anymore. Still guys like Danny, Chris Won and Cavin Yap kept the tradition alive by free-surfing and pulling moves like the surfboard crew were pulling. Standup legend Danny Kim scored the cover of Bodyboarding Magazine in Dec 89. It was at a time when standup bodyboarding was still popular and used in competition in small waves.

Danny Kim was not the first to standup bodyboard but he was definitely one of the best. With specially made BZ custom bodyboards he pulled amazing carving , floating and 360 moves and during the 80′s competed successfully on the Pro Tour. Danny from the Westside was a regular at Sandy Beach in the early days and his image graced many pages of Bodyboarding magazine. His high performance riding inspired the next generation of standups including Chris Won and Kavan Yap.
