Mike Stewart opened a door of posibilities when he sussessfully took on Jaws riding a bodyboard for the first time. Up to this point Tow-in bodyboarding was virtually undiscovered and that bodyboards themselves would not be able to handle the size.Mike proved the skeptics wrong. Northside bodyboarders Nick and Adrian Hybner (Slug) were standout riders at Monavale in the late 80′s. Older brother Nick and Matt Riley were full on competition rivals back in those days. The pair were continually pushing each other in and out of the surf. Eventually Nick followed a career as a chef and gave up competing while younger brother Slug went on to make a name for himself throughout the 90′s. This shot of Nick freefalling was taken at the Monavale Basin also called The Whomp around the late 80′s, its Monavales answer to Waimea shorey.

The sport of Bodyboarding owes a lot to Hubb who has almost single handedly revolutionised aerial moves since he busted onto the scene in the mid 90′s. From his big airs, 720′s and signature Hubb move he has continually pushed the envelope. This pic of Hubb in typical flight on the cover of Bodyboarding Magazine was on the Jan.  2000 issue.
