During the 80s and 90′s Mike Stewart was easily one of the most respected watermen out at Pipeline. Few who have seen him in action on a maxing 2nd reef day will argue. He was even voted by Surfers like Johnny Boy Gomes as one of the best. From positioning, to drawing his line, fearlessness and ocean knowledge makes him the one to watch. Other bodyboarders surf it well but Mike is a step above the rest. A true barrel genius. Photo Vince Cavataio circa ’94.

Around 1989 Mike Stewart came to Australia to promote his Turbo signature board on the Goldy and Sunny Coast. Kids turned up in the hundreds treating Mike like a Surf God. The crowds were chock a block full of stoked kids. The following summer Mike’s model was the best seller of the high end market. This article appeared in Body Lines in Waves Magazine June 87. The article was called “Attack of The Bellymen”. It starts off with a little fond tale about Mike Stewart told by Ross Hawke. Hellman , Hauoli and Kai Santos were hanging out bored on the Northshore so they decided on a trip to Kiddieland the notorious dumping shorebreak where 6 ft walls crash onto dry sand. The boys picked up Mike who lived right nearby and charged the shorey. Mike stole the show when he pretended to be a helpless tourist getting sucked out backwards into this super heavy rip and smashed by the waves. The real tourists watching thought it was for real and were freaking out. Pic of Mike by Wilmont.

This shot was taken at Manly Beach late 80′s during one of the Pro Comps. Mike was in his prime, he was winning everything and was dominating every aspect of the sport. From media, to contests to new moves and  pushing the limits at Pipe, Mike was bodyboardings number one asset.   You’d be smiling too photo Stroh
