Crispin Hughes has always been a bit of a mystery man. Coming from Avalon on Sydneys Northern Beaches throughout the 90′s the Dropknee maestro earned a reputation as a bit of a soul surfer. Never one to chase the points and glory Crispin still had the knack to turn up in the right place at the right time. His collaborations with photographer Scott Aichner resulted in some classic pictures. Today Crispin now one of the elder statesman is still tearing it apart. This shot taken at one of his favourite hangouts, Lil Avalon.

Ryan Hardy’s win in the 2006 Shark Island Challenge was epic. The last heats were held right on sunset with a mean and heavy growing swell. By the end of the final hooter the boys paddled in under darkness. The waves were going off for the final heats and Hardballs win was well deserved after he powered through some heavy pits. Below a popular winner, Hardy reaps the rewards pic by Stroh

When Lanson Ronquilio busted onto the Northshore scene in the early 90′s he quickly became the “next big thing” in the sport. Lanson had smooth textbooks moves and charged hard. While his comp results didn’t reflect his natural ability it was his free surfing and clean style that gained him world wide respect. He was signed to Morey, pulled the move that sparked the rise of the gymnastic era , was apart of No Friends and almost drowned once at Pipe. Lanson is typical of the Hawaiian bodyboarders, all about getting the job done without banging his own drum.Pic Stroh ’96.
