Whether prone or dropknee Macca was a stylish dude. Its not surprising he dominated Aussie bodyboarding for many years around 1990 about the same time this snap was taken at Maroubra his home beach. Photo Stroh

This day was classic, Eppo , Bullet and myself were cruising the mid north coast on a photo/video mission when a cyclone swell hit in the early 90′s. Forster area is not renown for big waves and was closing out except for this one reef that was pretty much all time. Eppo and Bullet charged it and the word got out at the local school and before we knew it the headland was full of kids, the teachers let classes out so the pupils could watch 2 of Aus greats tear up their local spot..photo and words Stroh.

K Bay is sacred ground for Steve “Bullet” Mackenzie and many of the Eastern Suburbs early pioneers of Aussie bodyboarding. The natural wedging waves are ideal for getting barreled and launching from. This pic of young Bullet was taken around 1990 carving a chunk out of a K Bay face, photo Stroh

Steve “Bullet” Mackenzie grew up at Maroubra one of the most heaviest localised surf zones in the world. Macca was probably the only bodyboarder to be given a get out of jail free pass as the local surfers loved him and he was one of the boys. The shot below was taken in the Maroubra shorey in the 80′s where Bullet at the time was still a youngster honing his skills. Macca would soon become one of the best tube riders and most respected bodyboarders on the planet. Photo Stroh.

Steve “Bullet” Mackenzie from Maroubra is one of Australia’s most respected bodyboarders. He won the first contest he ever entered that just happened to be a Aussie Title. Macca went on to dominate the local comp scene notching up many State and National titles along the way. Bullet in the early years was winning with his dropknee but after a wipeout in West Oz wrenched his knee he switched to prone. In 92 he placed 6th at the World titles at Pipe. Then in ’98 he beat 2nd Kainoa McGee, 3rd Danial Rocha and 4th Alistair Taylor to win the most prestigious crown in bodyboarding in maxing conditions. Macca also in 98 won the sports other most desired trophy the Shark Island Challenge. Bullet is best remembered for his classic lines and his smooth tube riding skills, no matter the size. These days Macca keeps a pretty low profile, fishing and surfing mostly away from the crowds. This pic was snapped late 80′s in The Bra shorey photo Chris Stroh
